Separatist Alliance

A shadow government built on droids, deception, and the promise of independence.

The Separatist Alliance, often referred to simply as the Confederacy of Independent Systems or CIS, was a galactic coalition of star systems that seceded from the Galactic Republic during the final decades before the Clone Wars. Led by Count Dooku and secretly orchestrated by Darth Sidious, this faction sought to dismantle what they viewed as a corrupt, bureaucratic government dominated by the Jedi Order and the Senate.

Functioning as the primary antagonist force in the Clone Wars, the Alliance relied heavily on droid armies rather than biological soldiers, fielding vast legions of battle droids to challenge the Republic's clone troopers. Despite their industrial might and strategic brilliance, the organization was ultimately a puppet regime designed to facilitate the rise of the Galactic Empire.

Lore & Background

The seeds of the Separatist movement were sown during a time of growing disillusionment with the Galactic Senate. Many systems felt ignored by Coruscant's endless debates and perceived corruption, leading to a mass exodus from the Republic. Count Dooku, once a respected Jedi Master who had fallen to the dark side, emerged as the charismatic face of this rebellion. He convinced thousands of worlds that separation was their only path to sovereignty, though in reality, he was merely a pawn for his Sith Master, Darth Sidious.

The Alliance established its own government structure, complete with a Separatist Senate and a ruling Council of Trade Guilds, including the Commerce Guild, InterGalactic Banking Clan, and Techno Union. These corporate giants provided the funding and resources necessary to build a massive droid army, bypassing the Republic's need for biological recruitment. While they claimed to fight for freedom, their leadership was often driven by profit margins and political maneuvering rather than genuine democratic ideals.

The conflict culminated in the Battle of Coruscant and the subsequent execution of Order 66, which simultaneously ended the war and wiped out the Jedi. With Dooku dead and General Grievous hunted down, the Separatist leadership was decimated. Sidious then ordered the shutdown of all droid armies via a remote signal, instantly rendering the massive military force obsolete and cementing the transition from Republic to Empire.

In Their Own Story

The hangar bay on Utapau thrummed with the frantic, dying heartbeat of an empire. Battle droids stood in rigid, silent rows, their blue optics flickering like dying stars as they awaited a command that would never come. General Grievous paced near the docking ramp of his starfighter, the rhythmic *clank-clank* of his magnetic boots echoing against the metal floor. His mechanical lungs wheezed with a mixture of impatience and dread as the distant rumble of Republic gunships vibrated through the cavernous space, signaling the final curtain on the Separatist dream.

"The signal has been sent," a comms officer whispered, his voice trembling over the static. "All droids are powering down."

Grievous froze mid-stride. The realization crashed over him with the weight of a collapsing star: their army—the greatest collection of machinery the galaxy had ever forged—was instantly obsolete. Across the sector, the hum of engines died in unison. He looked out at the sky where the Republic fleet descended, his four arms twitching uselessly as he watched thousands of years of industrial might turn into nothing more than cold scrap metal.

Reader's Guide

The Separatist Alliance was a breakaway government formed by systems seeking independence from the Galactic Republic. Its primary goal was to create a new galactic order free from what it perceived as Senate corruption and Jedi interference. However, this movement was manipulated from the shadows by Darth Sidious to ensure the destruction of both the Republic and the Jedi Order.

The faction's membership included powerful trade guilds, banking clans, and hundreds of star systems that felt marginalized by Coruscant. Key figures included Count Dooku as the political leader and General Grievous as the Supreme Commander of their military forces. Unlike the Republic, which relied on clone troopers, the Separatist military was composed entirely of battle droids produced in massive factories.

During the Clone Wars, the Alliance fought a galaxy-spanning conflict against the Republic. They utilized superior numbers and advanced starship designs to challenge the Jedi-led Grand Army of the Republic. Despite initial successes and strategic victories on various fronts, internal disorganization and the secret machinations of their own leaders led to their downfall. The faction effectively ceased to exist once the droid army was deactivated at the war's end.
